Jack Daniel’s is the oldest distillery in the USA, first bottling their product back in 1866 (over 150 years ago). So we headed to the source, the Jack Daniels distillery. George Dickel Cascade Hollow in Tennessee The Jack Daniel’s DistilleryĪfter learning a little about Kentucky Bourbon back in Bardstown, we wanted to know what was special about Tennessee Whiskey. Of course, to get a “Kentucky bourbon” label, there are a lot more rules to follow, but that’s another story. So therefore, if a distillery in the USA makes two bottles of whiskey, one with 60% corn and one with 40% corn, and ages them both in new charred-oak barrels, then both can be called whiskey, but only one can be called bourbon. Whiskey doesn’t have such strict rules it is a spirit created by fermenting grains (wheat, barley, corn, and/or rye)-the combination of which gives each recipe its distinctive flavor. To simplify a lot (maybe oversimplifying, sorry bourbon connoisseurs), but for a bottle to be called “bourbon”, it must first be made in the USA, use more than 51% of corn and be aged in a new charred oak barrel. The seeds for where I am now were sewn a long time ago. However, it is very possible that I could have kept going on a path fairly divorced from my personal values and the shift that made today possible is a function of my decision when I hit my mid-30s to find a way to live all facets of my life as a whole person and to use my energy with purpose, which for me has been largely defined by an intense desire to help realign human behavior with nature and with dignity. It is true that in many respects, this very moment is my life coming full circle to the values that I learned as a child combined with the professional experience of my life to date. Vanessa: The short, surface level version is that I went from a very creative, multifaceted, progressive and academic upbringing with access to some of the earliest internet technology in the corn fields and industrial towns of the Midwest and the Rust Belt to becoming an emerging markets finance professional in New York, and now am bringing my business experience to solving problems in the fashion sector through the tech-enabled sustainable apparel company I founded, Another Tomorrow. How did you get here? What experiences, failures, setbacks or challenges have been most instrumental to your growth? First things first, though, I am sure readers would love to learn more about you. Vanessa was previously a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley, where she held several leadership roles in the emerging markets institutional securities business.Īdam: Thanks again for taking the time to share your advice. Later, printers designed a font containing a special symbol of “lb” with a line through the verticals so that the “l” wouldn’t be mistaken as a one (℔, Unicode character U+2114). Originally “lb.” was used for this same meaning. The # is often called the pound symbol in the United States as it is often used with numbers related to weight.patent in 1973 where “octothorpe” first appears, the asterisk (*) was referred to as a “sextile”. Jim Thorpe eventually had his Olympic medals returned in 1983… 30 years after his death.Given that the word circulated around Bell Labs for about 10 years before appearing in text, it’s also possible it was invented by Don Macpherson, as Ralph Carlson said, and that C Schaak and Herbert T Uthlaut mocked the term calling it “octatherp” as a joke, as Douglass Kerr said. Why would they say “octa” instead of “octo” and why would it have been changed relatively quickly after its creation to “octothorpe” in the first patent that references the term? Nevertheless, Kerr was there, so perhaps it’s true or perhaps not as Ralph Carlson was there too. This seems less plausible than the previous story. Macpherson at this time was part of the group that was trying to get Thorpe’s 1912 Olympic medals returned.ĭouglas a Kerr of Bell Labs stated in 2006 that the term was invented by C Schaak and Herbert T Uthlaut and it was originally “octatherp”, which was more or less a joke term between the two. The latter “thorpe” was in reference to the incredible Native American athlete “Jim Thorpe”, who at the time was trying to get his 1912 Olympic medals returned after having them stripped away due to the fact that he once had accepted money for playing a sport (baseball), previous to those Olympics. He thought Bell Labs needed an unambiguous name for the # symbol, which had many names, so came up with “octothorpe”. Ralph Carlsen of Bell Labs wrote a memorandum on this symbol upon his retirement in 1995 where he states that Don Macpherson came up with the name when he went out to instruct their first client of the new telephone system, the Mayo Clinic. The origins of the “thorpe” (sometimes written “thorp”) are not so clear. It is clear the “octo” part was thought up because of the eight points on the symbol. It was during this time that Bell Labs came up with the now ubiquitous “touch tone dialing”, which added two additional keys to handsets, the “*” key and the “#” key. However, what is known is that it was a term engineers at Bell Labs started using as early as the 1960s when Bell Labs was working on interfacing techniques between computers and telephones. The exact etymology of this word isn’t known as the two “eye witness” accounts are contradictory. The origins of this term date back to the 1960s and 1970s in Bell Labs with the first documented place this word showed up being in a U.S. Today I found out the symbol on the “pound” or “number” key (#) is also called an “octothorpe”. One of the earliest with the now ubiquitous “*” and “#” symbols 1966, 1500 series phone model from Bell Labs. 8/13/2023 0 Comments GigafactoriesStellantis has said that without action it could be forced to shut some of its UK operations. The Brexit trade deal struck between the UK and EU at the end of 2020 contained “rules of origin” aimed at boosting domestic electric car battery production to reduce dependence on Asian imports, but new factories have not sprung up quickly enough, meaning some carmakers may face the prospect of tariffs on exports in January. Germany’s carmakers this week joined calls for an extension of a Brexit trade deadline by three years to avoid a 10% price rise on EVs that cross the Channel to the UK, after Ford, Stellantis and Jaguar Land Rover warned the British government that rules on where parts are sourced from threaten the future of the UK car industry. Battery Valley has the enthusiastic support of the French president, who this week unveiled a raft of green measures and tax credits – including electric vehicle (EV) subsidies – aimed at attracting billions of euros in new investment to “reindustrialise” France, create jobs and increase manufacturing from 10% of the country’s economic output to 15%. 8/13/2023 0 Comments Your not a quitterI’m Giving Away 30 Books Written By My Heroes for FREE! But maybe…ĭon’t blame yourself if you don’t finish something. I just looked at a story I wrote 23 years ago. It sits there, in your heart, somewhere in the labyrinth. And yet … a labyrinth evokes mystery, evokes exploration – the way an idea begins somewhere, goes around corners, finds dead ends, comes back, explores, and ultimately exits into the light, creating the work it was always intended to be. Instead they are scrunched up like a “labyrinth” to fit inside your body. If you stretched out the intestines in a straight line they would be 30 feet long. It was used originally to describe the maze-like way the intestines digest and push food out of the body. It was done in typical Casey style: he’s doing various fun things while talking and then he gets into the heart of the matter. I watched a vlog by my recent podcast guest, Casey Neistat.
